Our Mission "Chimbote 2010 and Beyond"

In 2010 we will also be establishing a full time medical clinic in Chimbote that will treat and educate the people of the village. It will also allow us to establish a training facility for future medical professionals. We will work with Universities in the United States and Peru offering internships for those currently attending medical school. We will establish educational grants which will allow future medical professionals the opportunity to obtain funding for their education in exchange for future service commitments at our clinic.

We will be working again in 2010 with medical groups and volunteers to assist  the poorest of the poor in Chimbote, Peru, South America. The group of medical professionals and volunteers will be working with the many needs of the residents that live in Chimbote. They have basic needs of food to eat, shelter from the countries elements, care for the sick, jobs to provide for their families, and access to education so their children can build a future.

The Demographic of Chimbote

The average resident in Chimbote earns $300 per year, placing families in the category of extreme poverty. The children and their families do not have their basic human needs satisfied and many health problems will occur such as diarrhea, infected wounds, pregnancy, vaccine-prevented illness, and minor injuries that can lead to death. The World Wide Institute indicates that life expectancy in Chimbote is 10 years lower than the national average in Peru.

We will be raising money to provide beds for families. Most families will sleep on the floor or have 4-5 people in a twin bed? Children will sleep on the cold dirt ground or take turns sleeping in the bed. How would these children do in school without adequate sleep? Would they catch colds in the winter time from sleep in the dirt?

The Plan for Chimbote 2010

Our medical mission group will be setting up a medical clinic  to care for individuals with multiple illnesses, handicaps, and a need for prenatal care. We will raise money for the medicine distributed and give free clinical visits. We will working with social workers assessing the needs of families, implementing plans of care, and providing basic needs such as food, water, medicine, clothes and shoes, or even educational materials such as paper and pencils.

Here is a picture from a previous trip where we brought toys, shoes, and items to give to the families. Most children do not have shoes, and will catch diseases from the ground of their homes, because they have chicken and other animals walking on the same floor areas where the animals will defecate.

Basic Needs for Chimbote 2010

Water is not always available. The water supply is usually 1 hour a day, and the families will catch the water from a hose into containers for their daily use. The water will be used for cooking, cleaning, bathing, drinking, laundry, bathroom, and used for cooking. There are organizations in Peru which are attempting to drill wells in the area but progress is slow, as the process is expensive and experienced labor is unavailable on a full time basis. Volunteers are the key to successfully making water available to all.

Distribution and storage of water is also on our list of to do's in Chimbote and we will be working to accomplish this in the near future.

Living Conditions  in Chimbote

Here is a family considered more wealthy. They are able to have beds to sleep on, and actual furniture. The normal family can not afford a bed. The frame, mattress, and blanket would cost $75. If a family only makes enough money to eat once a day, how could they afford a bed?

Water Supplies  in Chimbote

Here is the water they have saved. This is water they will use to clean, cook, bathe, and drink? If you had a family of 4-6, do you think this is enough water for the day?
